Thriving with Diabetes Starts Here

Living with diabetes doesn’t mean settling for a limited life. At Glucose Groove, I want to show you that it’s possible not just to manage diabetes, but to thrive with it.
Who I Am
Hi, I’m Shahzad Mahmood. I’m in my mid-40s, of South Asian heritage, and I live in the UK. In 2020, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and like many people, the diagnosis came as a shock.
The truth is, I had spent most of my life doing all the wrong things without realizing the cost: eating foods that spiked my blood sugar, living a sedentary lifestyle, sleeping too little, and carrying excessive stress. Looking back, I can see how these patterns built up over time and eventually pushed me toward diabetes.
When I first heard the diagnosis, I felt overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next. I had so many questions, but not enough clear answers. If you’ve ever left the doctor’s office feeling more confused than informed, you know exactly what I mean
The Bigger Picture
Type 2 diabetes is often called a “modern epidemic.” Around 1 in 10 adults worldwide live with diabetes, and the number is rising every year.
In the UK, over 4.3 million people have been diagnosed, with an estimated 850,000 more undiagnosed.
In the United States, the numbers are even larger. According to the CDC, 37 million Americans — about 1 in 9 adults — live with diabetes, and an additional 96 million are estimated to have prediabetes. That means nearly 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. is already affected or at risk.
For those of us from South Asian backgrounds, the risk is even higher. Research shows that South Asians in the UK are up to six times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared to the general population. Factors like genetics, diet, lifestyle, and stress all play a role.
But here’s the hopeful part: diabetes doesn’t have to control your life. With the right knowledge and habits, you can take charge of your health — and in many cases, aim for remission.

What I’ve Learned
Since my diagnosis, I’ve made it my mission to understand this condition better and to take back control of my health. Over time, I’ve worked to overcome the very obstacles that led me here:
Learning how to eat in a way that stabilizes blood sugar without giving up taste
Adding more movement and activity into my daily routine
Fixing my sleep and realizing how much rest affects glucose levels
Finding ways to reduce and manage stress so it doesn’t run my life
I’ve also spent years diving deep into the science: nutrition, insulin resistance, medication, fasting, mindset, and more. And while I don’t have all the answers, I’ve seen real improvements in my own health.
I’m still learning every day, and that’s a big reason I created Glucose Groove. This isn’t just a place where I share my knowledge, it’s a community where we can learn together, support each other, and grow stronger side by side.
